I’m buried. Literally. Under a mountain of fantastic photo contest entries. They’ve taken over my office. Send help! And chocolate. I’m kidding! It’s so much more fun to get the day’s mail when envelopes from as far away as Alaska arrive containing images from Bora Bora to Iceland to Lizard Island. I love sharing in all your wonderful trips by looking at all the great photos. Keep them coming!

November 19th, 2009 by Lori | No Comments | Filed in Photo Talk
Judging the Best Blurb Books Contest was a blast. After voting narrowed the travel books down to the top 15, I had the pleasure of selecting the Grand Prize Winner and the Runner Up. It was difficult to choose but J.C. Ecrement and O. Remualdo’s book Sadhus of Benares took home the grand prize. Not only were the black and white portraits of Sadhus in the Holy city of Varanasi stunning, but the book itself was well designed. Coming in a close second was Mediterranean Images by Susan Holmes.
The Shorebreak Art of Clark Little
November 6th, 2009 by Lori | 2 Comments | Filed in Hawaii, Photo TalkIt’s no secret that we here at ISLANDS are big fans of water and some of us have been known to catch a wave or two. So when I met Clark Little at the Maui Photo Festival I was intrigued by the images he was creating. Clark grew up surfing Oahu’s North shore and now spends his days bobbing in the waves creating stunning shorebreak images like the one pictured above. His first book, The Shorebreak Art of Clark Little, will be released November 15. Clark recently sent me a sneak peek and I can’t wait to get my hands on a copy.

You can’t be on every island at once — but you can feel like you are. Here are the latest links with useful information about island travel from around the world.
- Editor Eddy Patricelli survived Trinidad’s Carnival last year. Get your own Taste of Trini Carnival in New York City on Nov. 5.

Nikon GP-1 in Curacao
October 16th, 2009 by Matthew | No Comments | Filed in Photo TalkThe Picasa photo album linked from the photo to the left features another example of the Nikon GP-1 GPS photo-tagging unit in action. These photos I shot in Curacao with the GP-1 attached, recording location data — except when obstruction above blocked the signal.

Attached to the camera, the GP-1 unit makes for an untidy, but not unworkable system.
For untagged photos, I guessed the location from a photo taken nearby or used a map and my own knowledge of the area, the old-fashioned way. Click on the album’s map view under “Photo locations” to see where the photos were taken around the island.
