350: International Day of Climate Action

October 23rd, 2009 by Adrienne | No Comments | Filed in News and Deals

Tomorrow marks 350: International Day of Climate Action. Here’s a small sampling of islands around the world that are participating:

Fiji
350 villagers in traditional Fijian garb will send a Coconut Telegraph to the World when they stand in the shape of a giant 350 for photo ops.

Barbados
Ready, set…plant! 350 people will attempt to plant 350 trees in 350 seconds on Morgan Lewis Hill in St. Andrews, Barbados.

    Niue
The perfect mix: tree planting and cocktail creating. The daylong event kicks off with a blessing, then a tree-planting ceremony then finishes with a contest for the best 350Niue Cocktail.

      Philippines
The busy thoroughfare beneath the Lahung Elementary School skywalk will go still for 3.50 minutes when bike riders block the road so 35 people can lay down in the shape of 350.

        Iceland
Here’s a nod to those oh-so-sensistive-to-climate-change butterflies: 350 pieces of colorful butterfly-inspired artwork will be on display in Skagastrond, Iceland.

These are just a few of the communities around the world that are taking a stand for the planet tomorrow. After all, you don’t have to be on an island to help save the world. So how will you celebrate?

Packing List for Iceland: the camera gear edition

September 4th, 2009 by Lori | No Comments | Filed in Photo Talk

When we started planning our upcoming trip to Iceland, there were a number of things to think about: winter coats (not often found in the closet of us Florida girls!), boots, gloves, all that fun stuff. But as a photographer, there were a few other things I had to add to my packing list.

waterproof-camera-bag• The weather in Iceland can change in the blink of an eye, so in my quest to protect my camera gear from what sounds like frequent rain, I’m planning to pick up Lowepro’s DryZone 200 camera bag. It’s waterproof and it floats - even when fully loaded with gear. Let’s hope I never have to test that!

          • I’m also looking into a rain cover to keep my camera dry for shooting while it’s raining.

          • Hand warmers - easily tucked into gloves to keep fingers extra warm.

          • My next purchase? Extra camera batteries. The cold saps batteries faster than normal so keep extra batteries in your pocket (and thus warm) until you’re ready to use them.

          • Repeat after me: condensation is evil. Going from the cold outdoors to the toasty warm hotel will cause massive amounts of condensation on your camera. To minimize this put your camera in a sealed ziplock bag before heading in. Give it plenty of time to come up to room temperature before taking it out of the bag. Be sure to also bag your camera up before heading out into the cold.

          • Next up, dorky but practical fingerless gloves/mittens. In extreme cold, remember not to touch metal (your tripod!) with bare hands. Ouch!
