350: International Day of Climate Action

October 23rd, 2009 by Adrienne | No Comments | Filed in News and Deals

Tomorrow marks 350: International Day of Climate Action. Here’s a small sampling of islands around the world that are participating:

Fiji
350 villagers in traditional Fijian garb will send a Coconut Telegraph to the World when they stand in the shape of a giant 350 for photo ops.

Barbados
Ready, set…plant! 350 people will attempt to plant 350 trees in 350 seconds on Morgan Lewis Hill in St. Andrews, Barbados.

    Niue
The perfect mix: tree planting and cocktail creating. The daylong event kicks off with a blessing, then a tree-planting ceremony then finishes with a contest for the best 350Niue Cocktail.

      Philippines
The busy thoroughfare beneath the Lahung Elementary School skywalk will go still for 3.50 minutes when bike riders block the road so 35 people can lay down in the shape of 350.

        Iceland
Here’s a nod to those oh-so-sensistive-to-climate-change butterflies: 350 pieces of colorful butterfly-inspired artwork will be on display in Skagastrond, Iceland.

These are just a few of the communities around the world that are taking a stand for the planet tomorrow. After all, you don’t have to be on an island to help save the world. So how will you celebrate?

But I realize we’re not the only source for your island wallpaper needs. If you must look elsewhere, here are six wallpapers worth considering. Click on the images to go to the download page for each.

World’s 14 Best Islands for Families

October 7th, 2009 by Chris | 1 Comment | Filed in Best of the Week, Caribbean, Hawaii

If you subscribe to ISLANDS magazine, you’ve seen our latest “Best of the World” list — the 14 best islands for family vacations. I loved putting this article together based on my own family travels (our boys still talk about Green Turtle Cay in the Bahamas - see the Green Turtle Club trip video) as well as input from ISLANDS’ editors and contributors, including veteran travel writer Tony Perrottet. Below you’ll find this free excerpt from the November 2009 issue of ISLANDS, on sale at newsstands now, of “The Best Family Islands.” We showcase island resorts from the British Virgin Islands to Bora Bora that offer authentic travel experiences for the entire family. If the article doesn’t appear in your browser, click this link to go directly to the article in our Scribd archive.

          • The Methodist Church on the Fijian island of Bua have banned pants on Sundays, ruling that men must don sulus (sarong-type wraps) to reconnect to their island heritage. Pack accordingly.
          • Look twice before you pick that flower. The Center for Biological Diversity and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service have taken steps to protect two Caribbean plant species under the Endangered Species Act.

Best Islands to Live On - My Picks

June 25th, 2009 by Chris | 1 Comment | Filed in Best Islands to Live On, Best of the Week

On the islands.com home page, we just now posed the question, “Which Do You Think Is the Best Island to Live On”? We actually don’t rank them in the Best Islands to Live On issue (yet), preferring instead to highlight 10 islands we recommend and letting readers find the best ones for them. I’d love to hear what your personal best islands to live on would be. In the meantime, here are mine:

          1. Waiheke, New Zealand
The green hills, the beaches, the cottages, the no stop signs. Sold! And yes, that’s the island on our new cover.

          2. St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands
Here’s an island that was a web-only offering on the 2008 Best Islands to Live On list. Love the ease of having no immigration hurdles and the less touristy vibe.

          3. Taveuni, Fiji
Just the idea of saying, “Yes, I live in Fiji,” is incredible motivation. The story of an expat who made it happen despite some rough personal circumstances is even more inspiring.

          4. Big Pine Key, Florida
To be honest, with family and job, an island move isn’t happening in the near future — unless it’s a move to an island surprisingly close yet with that faraway feel.

          5. Nevis
Then again, that $3.5 million hillside home overlooking this Caribbean gem is hard to pass up…
