We’re all very excited that the “Best of the Caribbean” special issue of Islands magazine is finally hitting newsstands this Tuesday, Oct. 6. These days it seems complications when you fly are inevitable. So what’s the best way to handle airport issues, redirected flights and the snowballing obstacles that result? I found out one good strategy for dealing with airline delays on a recent trip to the British Virgin Islands that flew through Puerto Rico.

At a cozy table for 30, I sat down to dinner with billionaire knight Richard Branson. This was the first of the July 2009 Winemakers Dinners, a charity event in support of the BVI Charitable Fund. Known for yachting, the BVI stage a catchy illusion — sail up to any beach, drop the hook and it’s like you discovered the place. But on-land opportunities from natural sights to fine dining are plentiful and worth discovering too. I spent four days on the islands for the Winemakers Dinners, now a semi-annual charity event in support of the BVI Charitable Fund. I’ll write more about this trip soon.
