A great question just came in from ISLANDS reader Jennifer Franz: “What boots should you take to Venice? And is it better to just bring a carry-on?” Since Venice has steady rain throughout the year and notoriously floods (they have to put benches across San Marco to walk on!), a good pair of waterproof boots is an Italian must. I’ll admit it: I had never seen snow before my trip to Iceland last week. So as you can imagine, packing more than a bathing suit and flip flops was a daunting task. Surprisingly, I stayed pretty warm. Here’s my packing list to help you on your next snowy adventure.

Venice really is one of the most romantic islands in the world. I was lucky enough to spend a couple days there on my honeymoon - and I can’t wait to go back. Getting lost in the maze of canals, eating a piece of pizza from every stand you pass, taking gondola rides passed Marco Polo and Vivaldi’s homes, wondering the entire time how a city could be built on water… Even the down moments are exciting. Here’s the proven, complete way to experience this floating Italian city. I put my stamp of approval on it.
I wasn’t sure what to expect when I traveled recently to Tenerife, the largest of Spain’s Canary Islands, but I was totally blown away. For one thing, there’s the island’s newest 5-star property, Gran Melia Pelacio de Isora. The Red Level Concierge was just what I needed after my long flight by way of Miami and Madrid. (UPDATE: As of summer 2009, Air Europa offers a direct flight from Miami to Tenerife.) The personal butler service was able to arrange a deliciously relaxing aroma therapy session in my ocean-front suite, and sunset cocktails in the exclusive guest lounge were only a short walk away.
