In the November issue, you told us What You Love About the Caribbean. One of the most common answers: that white, pillowy sand. Well, here’s your chance to take a bit home with you — no pail and shovel necessary. Just order a wall hanging from Sea Sand Designs of St. Thomas. Artist Tracy Perry makes the sand-and-shell pieces by hand. Find the whimsical designs at her 21 stores throughout the U.S. Virgin Islands. Or order one online. She’s already taking orders for holiday-themed pieces (think Christmas greetings and Stars of David), so start checking people off your gift list now. After all, what could be better than giving someone a piece of your favorite island?
Island travelers flooded us with answers in the “What Do You Love About the Caribbean?” contest. Many of those reader responses are featured in the new “Best of the Caribbean” issue of ISLANDS magazine, which debuts on newsstands Oct. 6. Kathryn Maria Noll was one of two grand-prize winners for her brilliant mini-essay of why she loves the Barbados Wildlife Reserve (which you can read below). Her prize was a stay at the Windjammer Landing Villa Beach Resort, St. Lucia. She enjoyed her stay so much that she sent us this terrific photo album. Click on the photos to see larger views and her captions. You too might win a prize — this time, it’s a four-night stay at Casa de Campo in the Dominican Republic. Grand-prize winner 1: Kathryn Maria Noll Her winning entry in the “What Do You Love About the Caribbean?” contest.
“Barbados: Wildlife Reserve. Snow White doesn’t know what she’s missing. This magical, mahogany canopied sanctuary with its cobble stone paths, lily ponds, and friendly, wandering creatures is something right out of a rustic fairy tale. You must see the 2-3pm feeding to believe it. Exotic Patagonian Cavies, monkeys, deer, turtles, and birds all gather in a circle to share a peaceful community meal. Baby monkeys gobbling snacks on a bench with you is definitely delightful. But, watching a turtle stroll by with a monkey sitting on its shell while savoring an orange will charm the flip flops off of you!”
Grand-prize winner 2: Tracy DeVries Her prize was four nights at the Westin St. Maarten.
“Five minutes off the shore of St. Martin lies my slice of heaven. Your first glimpse is an idyllic sliver of white sand that meets the warm, shallow, crystal clear waters of the caribbean. Lined with colorful lounges and umbrellas, relaxation awaits. If activity is what you seek, try kayaking, exploring the uninhabited island by foot, or try your hand at some of the best snorkeling in the area. Oh, ‘and don’t forget the Karibuni Beach Bar’ insists my 11-year old daughter. ‘That’s where the best cheeseburger in paradise is.’ Welcome to Pinel Island.”

Travel photographers (and writers) are encouraged to “shoot the signs,” at hotels, parks, any points of interest. This helps with captions and fact-checking. But sometimes the signs themselves amuse. Here are a few I shot on my recent trip to Curacao.
