Kauai is one of the most beautiful places on earth. People agree about this. A first trip here can feel like an exercise in cataloguing places to come back to and spend more time: Waimea Canyon, Kalalau Trail, the hidden and possibly unnamed beaches around Kapa’a on the east coast. However long you have to visit won’t be long enough, but save at least one day for the signature Na Pali coast.

Kandui Resort, Mentawai Islands
Extraordinary waves and ordinary surfers — not always an ideal mix. But not all of us possess all-star surfing skills. So where’s the best place for average Joes to safely push themselves, enjoy world-class waves, and relax in comfort? My pick is the Kandui Resort, located in the Mentawai Islands off the west coast of Sumatra. Here’s how it delivered for two middle-age surfers from Florida:
Experience Indonesia (from home)
November 16th, 2009 by Eddy | No Comments | Filed in Asia, ISLANDS Experts
Last weekend, I camped on Indonesia’s most remote islands. I was embraced by a small village community. I built a well that provided them fresh water. The kicker? I did all this from Cocoa Beach, Florida, losing myself in what I thought was a surf movie. It starred waterman Rob Machado, though surfing wasn’t his primary focus. Below Rob, and the film’s director, Taylor Steele, offer a taste of why their movie The Drifter is different.

Seychelles beaches offer sun, shade, water, sand, great snorkeling and great views. By Ty Sawyer.
Featured in the 2010 ISLANDS Calendar (November), the remote Seychelles in the far-off Indian Ocean inspire by their colors — granite, green and blue — as well as the unyielding sense you’ve landed somewhere perfect.

The Shorebreak Art of Clark Little
November 6th, 2009 by Lori | 2 Comments | Filed in Hawaii, Photo TalkIt’s no secret that we here at ISLANDS are big fans of water and some of us have been known to catch a wave or two. So when I met Clark Little at the Maui Photo Festival I was intrigued by the images he was creating. Clark grew up surfing Oahu’s North shore and now spends his days bobbing in the waves creating stunning shorebreak images like the one pictured above. His first book, The Shorebreak Art of Clark Little, will be released November 15. Clark recently sent me a sneak peek and I can’t wait to get my hands on a copy.

What boots should you take to Venice?
November 4th, 2009 by Ashley | No Comments | Filed in Destination Spotlight, EuropeA great question just came in from ISLANDS reader Jennifer Franz: “What boots should you take to Venice? And is it better to just bring a carry-on?” Since Venice has steady rain throughout the year and notoriously floods (they have to put benches across San Marco to walk on!), a good pair of waterproof boots is an Italian must. Here’s my answer to Jennifer:
