Known for yachting, the BVI stage a catchy illusion — sail up to any beach, drop the hook and it’s like you discovered the place. But on-land opportunities from natural sights to fine dining are plentiful and worth discovering too. I spent four days on the islands for the Winemakers Dinners, now a semi-annual charity event in support of the BVI Charitable Fund. I’ll write more about this trip soon.
FLY American Airlines through San Juan, Puerto Rico, to Tortola’s Beef Island airport.
STAY at the Rosewood Little Dix Bay resort. Sister property to Caneel Bay resort in the USVI, Little Dix is the oldest resort on Virgin Gorda and has time-refined service to show for it, making a great base of operations for exploring the islands.
EAT at Little Dix Bay’s Sugar Mill fine-dining restaurant, pleasant walking distance from your room if you stay at the resort. Executive chef Hemant Dadlani’s Indian- and Asian-inflected cuisine focuses on strong flavors presented so as to fascinate rather than confuse. The curried lobster makes the best of a good thing.
VISIT the Baths. The site of elaborate granite formations at the water’s edge gets crowded because it’s famous, but it’s famous because it’s really cool. Even at peak hours, the moderate crowds shouldn’t undermine the experience. Still, for more privacy and that photo op where you’re wading alone in a cave pool, come in the morning. The rocks and caverns warrant hours of exploring.
